What stood out wasn’t just the weight of runs, but how he got them. Tilak remained quite considerate whatever was thrown outside his off-stump. He stitched together crucial partnerships, notably with skipper Ben Brown (58) and later Felix Organ (126) to rescue Hampshire from a mid-innings wobble.

This was Tilak Varma’s second hundred in four innings in English conditions. He had opened his County account with a sublime ton against Essex, followed by gritty knocks of 56 and 47.

In each outing, he has looked at ease, negotiating seam, swing, and discipline with a seasoned head. In a Hampshire side that has struggled for fluency this season, Varma has been a rare constant. His seven first-class hundreds now put him firmly in the conversation for India’s next batch of red-ball batters.

Tilak would be desperate to continue his purple patch in the upcoming Indian domestic season. The BCCI has stressed on rewarding players with terrific domestic performances. And for Tilak, he needs another banger season. He’s a regular in the Indian T20I setup and also for the Mumbai Indians. There are no such flaws in his technique, making him an all-format bet.
