Shubman Gill también necesita solo tres carreras para convertirse en solo un tercer indio en anotar más de 700 carreras en una serie de pruebas después de Sunil Gavaskar y Yashasvi Jaiswal.
In a Test match that began with chaos for India, calm and class came in the form of Shubman Gill and KL Rahul. On a treacherous Old Trafford surface, with India reeling at 0/2 after just one over, the duo produced one of the most resolute rearguard stands in recent memory.
By stumps on Day 4, India had reached 174/2 , which is still trailing England by 137 runs, but with their hopes of saving the series very much alive, thanks to unbeaten knocks from Rahul (87*) and Gill (78*). More importantly, the partnership etched their names into cricketing history, as both batters crossed 500 runs in the series, a feat last achieved by an Indian pair in an away Test series over five decades ago. 54 years, to be precise.
Gill-KL Rahul duo breaks records
With Gill now sitting on 697 runs and Rahul having crossed the 500-run mark (508*), the duo became the first Indian batting pair since Sunil Gavaskar (774) and Dilip Sardesai (642) in the 1970-71 West Indies tour to score 500+ runs in the same away Test series.
Rahul also entered elite company by becoming only the second visiting Asian opener after Gavaskar to score over 500 runs in a Test series in England. The last time any opener, regardless of nationality, achieved this was Graeme Smith in 2003.
Gill, meanwhile, continues to rewrite records in his maiden series as captain. His 697 runs have already surpassed Virat Kohli’s 655-run effort against England in 2016/17, the most by an Indian captain in a series against England. Only Sunil Gavaskar (732 vs WI in 1978/79) has scored more runs as a Test skipper for India. Gill is most likely going to past Gavaskar in this record by the end of Day 5 as well. He needs just 35 more runs.
As the runs continued to pour in, Rahul achieved another milestone by surpassing 9000 runs in international cricket across all formats for India. He is only the 16th Indian to do so.
Key Records Broken by Gill and Rahul:
- First Indian pair since 1971 (Gavaskar & Sardesai) to score 500+ runs each in an away Test series
- Shubman Gill: Most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series vs England (697*)
- KL Rahul: Second visiting Asian opener to score 500+ runs in a Test series in England
- KL Rahul: Crossed 9000 international runs for India
