The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is set to unveil statue in honour of former India captain Sunil Gavaskar at the Wankhede Stadium. The statue will be unveiled during the launch of MCA’s museum, named after former BCCI and MCA president Sharad Pawar. A statue in his honour will also be erected.

MCA to honour Sunil Gavaskar with Wankhede statue

As per Revsportz, MCA will unveil a statue of Sunil Gavaskar at the Wankhede Stadium. A champion of Mumbai cricket, the former India captain was the first to reach the milestone of 10,000 runs in Test cricket. A part of the 1983 World Cup winning team, Gavaskar scored 20 centuries in Ranji Trophy.

The statue comes after MCA erected a statue in honour of Sachin Tendulkar at the Wankhede C Block. The life-sized tourist attraction was inaugurated during the 2023 World Cup, with Mumbai serving as one of the hosts. Gavaskar’s statue comes on the lines after MCA’s dream museum project, set to be unveiled on August 23.

The museum has received memorabilia from 28 cricketers and have hopes from adding from Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar.

“Sandeep Patil has given his 1983 (World Cup) blazer, Salil Ankola has given his jersey. Pravin Amre has given his Mumbai and India caps. Dilip Vengsarkar is expected to give something. unny bhai was out of Mumbai. Now he is here and yesterday we had an interview with him. He will definitely give us. He is the biggest lover of Mumbai cricket. We have already approached Tendulkar and are waiting for his response. We will definitely get from all the cricketers,” MCA secretary Abhay Hadap told RevSportz.

The museum will be named after Sharad Pawar. Pawar has served as MCA, BCCI and ICC president and a statue of him will also be installed at the Wankhede Stadium. Visitors purchasing a ticket for the museum tour will also receive a free tour of the stadium. The entry fee is expected to be between Rs 200 to Rs 500.
