India cricket team batter Akash Deep revealed that he had made a promise to himself to not get out by playing any rash shot in the IND vs ENG 5th Test. Coming out to bat as a nightwatchman on Day 3 at the Oval, the bowler held his fort to stay unbeaten successfully and then go on to score a half-century the next day. Speaking about his valuable knock after the conclusion of IND vs ENG series, Akash revealed what exactly his game plan was.
Akash Deep delivers on promise
Speaking to Sports Tak, Akash claimed that his sole intention during his stay in the middle was to survive for as long as he could even if he did not score runs. The nightwatchman said that he had promised himself that he would not get out on Day 3 by playing any loose shot and succeeded in doing so.
“I never play my cricket based on hope. I promised myself at night that I would not get out. I made this commitment. I decided not to play a rash shot. If a good ball got me out, there was no issue with that, as these things can happen in cricket. If I didn’t score any runs, I was fine with it. My aim was just to stay at the crease. I had this motivation, and this made batting easier,” Akash Deep said.
Coming into bat as a nightwatchman, after the fall of Sai Sudharsan, with the scoreboard reading 70/2, not only he brought up 50 partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal, but also went on to score his maiden Test fifty, that too in only 70 deliveries.
He was dropped once by Zak Crawley, but by then he had already scored 20-odd runs, and his job as a nightwatchman was done. This fifty also meant, that he only became the fourth Indian batter at No. 4, to score a fifty in England since 2000 — after Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill.
