Handshake drama fired me up: Sundar after Old Trafford row with Ben Stokes

Washington Sundar finished the India vs England series with 284 runs, including a fighting 101 not out at Old Trafford. Sundar, promoted to No.5 helped India bat out Day 5 to clinch a draw and keep the series alive. It was his maiden Test century stitching a century stand with Ravindra Jadeja in response to England’s 300+ lead.

The game wasn’t without drama. With the match heading to a draw, Ben Stokes offered to call it a draw. Sundar and Jadeja refused, leading to a war of words. The match ended after they reached their milestones, with Stokes bowling Harry Brook and Joe Root in tandem.

“We’ve seen a lot of such things happen, not just in cricket, but in any sport. I mean, that’s how sport is. It brings out a lot. I think it was just an experience for all of us, honestly. You ask this to any player — that’s exactly what you would hear. Especially in Test cricket, you want to be challenged because that’s exactly what you expect every single day,” Sundar told Wisden.

When quizzed whether that altercation fired him, Sundar shot “100 percent.”
