On May 12, Virat Kohli announced his Test retirement. The India vs England Test series was about a month away. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hadn’t announced the squad for the tour. Kohli had reportedly conveyed his message long before, and the selectors were trying to sway him away from retiring, but he had made up his mind.

After the announcement, some speculated that Kohli was forced out by the BCCI. Even before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, talks between Kohli and the selectors were going on regarding his future. His performance hadn’t been up to the mark for the last 5 years, and age wasn’t on his side either.

Kohli should’ve played England Tests

Perhaps Kohli felt it was time to move on, or he’ll be dropped in the near future. We won’t know until he clears the matter himself. But former India chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar feels that the BCCI should have told him to stay at least until the India vs England Test series and then retire.

Vengsarkar, who was chief selector from 2006 to 2008, was the one who brought Kohli to the Indian team. He was impressed by the young talent after his performance in Australia for the India A team and his leadership skills in the U-19 World Cup. He thinks the current chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, should have told Kohli to stay a bit longer.

“If I were the India chief selector, I would have persuaded Virat to bid goodbye to Test cricket after playing the England series. We needed his class and experience in this series,” Vengsarkar told the Times of India.

Currently, a lot of talk has also been going around about Kohli’s international retirement. Reports suggest that BCCI will have a chat with him regarding his ODI future, with the 50-over World Cup still over 2 years away.
