July 2025 belonged to Test cricket. The riveting India vs England series was as tight of a Test series as it could’ve been, delivering record-breaking performances, nail-biting finishes, and individual brilliance. Unsurprisingly, two of the three nominees for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for July come from that blockbuster series, with India’s new captain Shubman Gill emerging as the clear favourite after his run-scoring spree in England.

He is joined by England’s talismanic leader Ben Stokes and South Africa’s in-form all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, who rewrote history in his own right.

Gill headlines a month of batting dominance

Leading India in his first Test series as captain, Shubman Gill could hardly have scripted a better month. The 25-year-old piled up 754 runs at an average of 75.40 across five matches, including a marathon 269 at Edgbaston that powered India to their record-breaking win. He followed it with 161 in the same Test, his aggregate of 430 runs in the match sitting second only to Graham Gooch’s iconic 456. Only Sunil Gavaskar has scored more runs than him in a Test series for India.

Gill then sealed his month with a fluent 103 at Old Trafford, rescuing India under pressure to force a series-levelling draw. His ability to absorb pressure, convert starts into big hundreds, and lead decisively in English conditions showed why he is being tipped as the natural successor to Virat Kohli.

Ben Stokes, England’s heartbeat, delivered yet another month of superb courage. His 304 runs at 43.43 and 17 wickets at 25.24 included Player of the Match displays. England maintained control with a valiant 141 at Old Trafford and a five-wicket haul in the same match by Stokes earned him plaudits even from Indian fans.

Wiaan Mulder, meanwhile, stole headlines in South Africa’s series against Zimbabwe. The 27-year-old all-rounder racked up an unbeaten 367 in Bulawayo, the highest Test score by a South African. Coupled with seven wickets across the series, Mulder was simply brilliant.
